But the smart fortwo’s individuality means there are some features that take a little getting used to, too.

Shifting the Right Way.

Correct shifting is everything when it comes to driving – not only in precarious situations, but even for the question of selecting the best gear, too. With the smart fortwo, the choice is easy: you have the option of both automatic and manual shifting.

Getting a Grip on Things.

The first time you open the smart fortwo's two-section tailgate, it may feel a bit unfamiliar. Simply reach into the recess at the upper edge of the white tailgate to activate the unlocking sensor. Then swing the hatch upward to open the roomy trunk. The lower tailgate is just as simple to open. Release the locks on the left- and right-hand side, open the tailgate, and start loading.

Close the two tailgate sections in reverse order, making sure that you hear both release levers click into place and that nothing catches in them.
