SHIFTING.

Selecting the best gear for your driving conditions is important. With the smart fortwo, the choice is easy: you have the option of both automatic and manual shifting.

THE INS AND OUTS.

To open the smart fortwo's two-section tailgate, reach into the recess at the upper edge of the white tailgate to activate the unlocking sensor. Then swing the hatch upward to open the roomy trunk. The lower tailgate is just as simple to open. Release the locks on the left- and right-hand side, open the tailgate, and start loading.

Close the two tailgate sections in reverse order, making sure that you hear both release levers click into place and that nothing catches in them.
