  • How do I join car2go?

    Joining car2go is easy. Simply register online and within 5-8 business days, you will receive a member card in the mail that allows you to access any available car2go on-demand. To become a member, you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid drivers’ license, credit card and cell phone number.

  • How much does membership cost?

    There is a one-time fee of $35 plus tax, unless you have a valid promo code. To check the validity of a promo code, please enter it into the registration form when you sign up. With car2go, you do not have to pay any annual or monthly membership fees. After the initial fee, you only pay for the time that you use.

    Starting June 1, 2015 there will be an additional $1 (plus tax) driver protection fee added to the first 90 car2go trips completed per calendar year to reduce the deductible to $250. After 90 car2go trips are completed the driver protection fee is waived for the remainder of the calendar year and the deductible is reduced to $0.

  • Who is eligible to become a car2go member?

    In order to join car2go you must have at least two years of driving experience in the US or three years of driving experience in Canada, a valid driver’s license, credit card and cell phone.

  • When can I start driving?

    As soon as you receive your car2go member card in the mail.

  • How long does it take to receive my member card?

    After completing the online registration process, our insurance company will verify your driver’s license and driving history. Once the information has been verified, your car2go member card will be sent via mail. Please allow 5-8 business days for the card to arrive.

  • I just received my member card, how do I use it?

    The car2go member card will give you access to any available car2go vehicle. To confirm whether or not a car is available, simply check the card reader on the windshield. To open the car, hold the member card in front of the reader, wait for the doors to unlock and follow the instructions on the in-car computer screen.

  • What type of cars does car2go use?

    car2go uses the eco-friendly smart fortwo.

  • Can I use car2go for one-way trips?

    Absolutely! car2go is the only free-floating on-demand carsharing program in North America and is designed for one-way, hassle free trips. You do not need to tell us when or where you are picking up the car and do not need to bring it back to a designated parking space or location. Make sure you know your home area , and Parking Rules and FAQ before you go.

  • Is mileage included in my trips?

    Yes, mileage is included. 150 miles are included per trip in the US; 200 kilometers are included per trip in Canada.

  • I lost my member card, how do I get a new one?

    Please contact your local office and us and let us know. We will be happy to send you a replacement card; a $25 lost member card fee may apply.

  • How long does it take to become a car2go member?

    Signing up online takes only a few minutes. Once you have successfully joined, we will send you a member card within 5-8 business days.

  • Where do I join?

    Simply fill out our online form here. You will need a valid driver’s license and credit card.

  • What is a MVR?

    Because insurance is included in the rates for car2go, we need to make sure that your driving record meets certain insurance requirements. When you register, we check your driving record (MVR) to make sure that you are eligible for membership.

  • I received an email saying that I failed my MVR. Why?

    The following items on a driving record may result in the denial of your membership application: A driver’s license that is currently suspended, revoked, expired, or surrendered; Convictions for reckless driving within the past 60 months; Convictions for driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, or driving while impaired within the past 60 months; Conviction for possession of a stolen vehicle, or unauthorized use of a vehicle, or the use of a vehicle in the commission of a crime in the past 60 months.

  • I received an email saying that I was a No Hit? What does this mean?

    We were attempting to process your registration, but our insurers were unable to find a match for your driver’s license data (MVR). The most common reason for this is inaccuracies in your personal information. Please login to your car2go account to make sure that your driver’s license and personal info is correct.

  • Where do I find a car2go?

    car2go has hundreds of smart fortwos located throughout the Home Area in any given car2go city. The nearest car2go can be found via our website or smart phone app.

  • How do I get into a car2go?

    The car2go member card will allow you to access any available car2go.

  • Will a car be available when I want one?

    The size of our fleet and free floating parking concept makes it easy to find an available car2go nearby.

  • Do I have to reserve a car in advance?

    No, reservations are not required. You may use any available car2go on-demand.

  • How long in advance can I reserve a car2go?

    Reservations can be made up to 30 minutes in advance. During this time you are the only member that can access that specific car2go. If the reservation expires, you will have to reserve another car2go or begin your trip.

  • How do I make a reservation?

    Reservations can be made via the car2go smart phone app, the car2go finder on our website or via the call center.

  • Where are the keys?

    The keys are located in the car2go next to the touchscreen. To use them, simply enter the car using your car2go member card and enter your PIN.

  • Do car2gos have automatic or standard transmissions?

    All car2gos are equipped with automatic transmissions.

  • Does car2go have roadside assistance?

    Yes. There is a 24 hour emergency SOS button in the vehicles as well as a call center that is staffed 24/7. US: 1-877-488-4224 Canada: 1-855-454-1002

  • Can I use car2go in other car2go cities?

    Yes! car2go members may use car2go in any city in North America using their account. For complete information on multi-city access, please click HERE.

  • If I reserve a car2go in the US, can I drive it out of state or into Canada/Mexico?

    No. If you begin a trip in the US the vehicle is not permitted to be driven to Canada or Mexico.

  • If I reserve a car2go in Canada, can I drive it to the US?

    No. If you begin a trip in Canada the vehicle is not permitted to be driven to the US.

  • Do I have to return the car2go to the same place I picked it up?

    No. Because car2go is one-way and free floating, you do not have to return the car to the place that you picked it up. Simply park the car in an approved car2go parking location within your city’s Home Area .

  • What happens if I get a parking ticket or other violation?

    car2go members are required to follow the car2go parking rules. If a member parks a car2go in an unapproved space and receives a parking ticket, the member who ended their trip in the unapproved space will be responsible for the amount of the fine.

  • Do I have to pay for parking meters when I’m using a car2go?

    Parking is included in the cost of your car2go trip, meaning you do not have to pay for parking in approved car2go parking spaces. Please refer to your city’s Parking Rules and FAQ for complete details of the parking that is included.

  • Can I share my membership?

    No, memberships may not be shared. Lending your member card or letting someone else drive on your account is a violation of the Terms and Conditions .

  • Can someone who is not a member drive a car2go?

    No, you are the only who is allowed to drive with your member card. Allowing third parties or unauthorized users to drive on your account is a violation of the Terms and Conditions.

  • Can someone who is a member drive a car2go during another members’ trip?

    No, you are the only member that is allowed to drive during a trip that is started using your member card. Allowing unauthorized drivers or third parties to drive using your member card (even if they are also members) is a violation of the Terms and Conditions.

  • Do I need to clean the car?

    No, cleaning is included in the trip rates but we ask that our members follow the golden rule when sharing our cars. If excessive cleaning is required, an additional fee may be assessed.

  • Do I have to refuel the car?

    No, fuel is included in the trip rates. If you need to refuel during a trip, a fuel card is located in the vehicles.

  • Can I smoke in a car2go?

    Smoking is not permitted at any time.

  • Can my pet ride in a car2go?

    Your pets may ride in a car2go only if they’re in an approved pet carrier.

  • What does car2go cost?

    Trips are billed by the minute with discounted hourly and daily rates. For a complete list of car2go Rates in your city, please click here.

  • How do I pay for car2go?

    When you join car2go you will be asked for a debit or credit card to be put on file. All trips will be billed to the payment method that you have on file.

  • Who pays for parking tickets?

    In the event that a car2go is ticketed, the member that parked the vehicle in the offending location will be charged with the fine.

  • Who pays for tolls?

    The member that was driving at the time of the toll assessment will pay the amount of the toll plus a small processing fee.

  • Are there any other fees?

    There are fees relating to the misuse of car2go vehicles. Please see here for a complete list of potential violations and their associated fees.

  • How does insurance work?

    With car2go, insurance is included. Base membership coverage includes the following limits: Liability of $100,000 Bodily injury per person / $300,000 Bodily injury per accident per accident and $50,000 Physical Damage per accident.

  • Can I purchase additional coverage, such as a loss damage waiver?

    A loss damage waiver is not currently offered by car2go at this time.

  • Are there any circumstances when I’m not covered by car2gos insurance?

    Lending your member card to a friend or family member is a violation of the terms and conditions and could disqualify the member and the unauthorized driver of insurance coverage. Unauthorized third parties include a third-party Member who is not a driver of record for the Trip Period. If the unauthorized driver is in an accident or causes damage to the vehicle, the cardholder is liable for all damages.

    Important: car2go members are responsible for all costs related to damage occurring during a reservation, as well as extreme soiling of the car2go, any driving or parking offenses, and violations of the valid terms of use. Please refer to the Terms and Conditions for additional information.
